What starts as a barely noticeable twinge in your mouth can quickly turn into a dental emergency. If you notice severe sensitivity to hot and cold, see pus around your gums or feel pain, schedule an appointment right away. When left untreated these symptoms can turn into a serious, even life-threatening infections.
Having a toothache is a sign that you need fast treatment before symptoms worsen. As you wait for your appointment, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water. Try using floss or a toothpick to release stuck-on food. Applying ice in 10-minutes-on, 10-minutes-off increments can help relieve pain, as do over-the-counter medicines such as Tylenol and aspirin. Do not put medicine directly on the affected tooth as a damaging chemical burn can result.
Damaged or Knocked-Out Tooth
If you have suffered a blow to your mouth or have a weakened tooth that finally broke, the emergency dentist at Anderson Dental may be able to save your tooth. First, save as much of the broken pieces as you can by rinsing them and placing them in a zip-lock bag; put a knocked out tooth in milk or water with a pinch of salt, being careful to touch only the enamel and not the roots. Apply clean gauze to stop bleeding if necessary, and use a cold compress to make pain and swelling more manageable until your appointment.
Lost Fillings and Crowns
Older fillings and crowns sometimes separate from the tooth. Never use household glue to reattach a filling or a crown; instead, call Anderson Dental at 928-474-4581 for a same day dental emergency appointment. In the meantime, you can use Vaseline to reaffix the filling or crown to the tooth.
Payson Dental office for Dental Emergencies
We have happy patients.
At age 12 I chipped one of my front teeth. At age 14, I chipped the other front tooth. Soon after, both teeth *died* and began getting darker. Three botched root canals with a student dentist drove me away from normal dental care. 30 years later, I was in danger of losing every tooth in my head. I was behind closed doors and avoiding any live contact with clients because my smile didn’t reflect the person I was. Dr. Eric sat me down and gave me options, then gently and professionally did a couple of root canals to save two important back teeth.
This gave me the confidence to agree to more work. More options were discussed, and we finally agreed on two bridges across the front of my mouth where most of the damaged and dead teeth were. A few months later, and I am a new person. Happy and smiling all the time, I am now eager to meet new people. This has given me the confidence to become a personal business coach.
Thank you Dr. Eric!
